Steps Towards CDL Certification in Billings
The rules can vary by state, but drivers generally must be at least 18 years old to obtain a Class A CDL for local work and at least 21 years old to cross state lines. The process of obtaining a CDL begins with enrollment in the 160 driving academy and 40 hours of classroom instruction that provides the knowledge that you need to operate a tractor-trailer.
Then, you will obtain a commercial learner permit from the Montana department of motor vehicles by passing a written exam and providing documentation of residency. With that permit, you will then begin 120 hours of behind-the-wheel training with your instructor as you learn to safely maneuver the truck.
Once you have completed your CDL school, you can visit your doctor and obtain a CDL medical card verifying your fitness to drive and take a driving test at the Department of Motor Vehicles. The Class A CDL makes it legal for a driver to operate a tractor-trailer with a combined weight of 26,001 pounds or more.
